Activity Providers - What Cover do you need?

Activity Providers - What Cover do you need?

If you are a new activity provider, or arranging insurance for the first time, it can be difficult to know what cover your business may need. Activity providers can face a range of risks depending on the activities they deliver, where they operate, who they work with and the equipment or premises they use. Understanding the main types of cover available can help you ask the right questions and make informed decisions.

Often the choice of cover is driven by legal requirements, specific risk exposure, operational needs, and financial constraints. These factors can influence your choice of insurance provider.

Some of the main types of cover to consider include:-

Public Liability: Public Liability cover can help protect your business if a claim is made against you for bodily injury or third-party property damage. The level of cover required may depend on the activities you provide, where you operate and any contractual requirements set by venues, clients or local authorities. Some organisations may request higher limits, so it is important to check any agreements carefully. You should also make sure all activities are accurately declared and that you understand any exclusions or specific operating conditions.

Employers’ Liability:  If you employ someone directly and they become injured while under your control you could be held accountable for that injury. Providers should check whether cover is required for staff, volunteers, freelancers working under their direction. Professional Indemnity: If you charge a fee to provide expert advice, tuition or coaching, professional indemnity cover can protect you if you are alleged to have provided inadequate advice, services or designs that caused a client financial loss. AIM’s standard limit of cover is £100,000. Depending on the services you provide and any contractual requirements, you may need a higher limit.

Equipment: Activity gear such as kayaks, bikes, safety harnesses, tents for example can be expensive so it is important that you provide the value to replace items should they be damaged or stolen. AIM’s cover is based on a ‘new for old’ basis so the replacement value you provide should reflect replacement as new rather than second hand.

Property: If you have premises that you operate from or outbuildings for storage and require cover you need to provide an estimated rebuild value should you suffer damage or loss at the premises. You may also include the contents inside the premises such as tables, chairs computers and other contents.

The Mutual can offer cover for all these elements and in addition we can obtain quotations for other types of cover outside of the Mutual. Details of which can be found here.
